Further information about Panda Licorice comfits

People have enjoyed licorice and used it for various purposes for thousands of years already. Licorice is made of the root of a flowering pea plant. In nature this licorice plant can be found for instance in Turkey, Iraq and China. Chinese people in olden times believed that licorice gave you strength and ensured a long life. Egyptians in ancient times thought that the licorice plant had the power to ward off evil spirits, and therefore tombs were often equipped with a jar containing licorice root. Even Tutankhamun had such jar in his tomb.
Roman legionaries took licorice to stop them feeling thirsty in the battlefield. In the Middle Ages monks used to sell licorice as a medicine for cough, stomach problems and other ailments. Napoleon loved licorice and chewed it to calm his nerves before a battle.
Licorice as a confectionery item was invented in 1760, when George Dunhill, an apothecary from Yorkshire, began to add sugar and flour to his expensive licorice extract to make it last longer. Nowadays, more than 60% of Finns eat licorice regularly and its consumption is increasing rapidly.
