Horse chestnut for varicose veins

Venaforce® - extract of freshly harvested horse chestnut seeds

Horse chestnut is probably the most popular herb used in the treatment of varicose veins. It is the seeds of the horse chestnut tree which are used medicinally – and these are the same seeds gathered each autumn for the game of conkers.

he botanical name of the horse chestnut tree is Aesculus hippocastanum and because of this, horse chestnut seed preparations are sometimes also known simply as Aesculus.

Further information about A Vogel Venaforce (formerly Aesculus)

Summer is upon us and, however much you love the hot weather, it can have unpleasant effects on your lower limbs.

Heat can disturb fluid balance and cause swelling and oedema. Many people find their feet and ankles swell as the day goes on, especially if they have a sedentary occupation or, alternatively, if they are taking unaccustomed exercise, as many people do on their holidays.

Pregnancy or being overweight can contribute to a constricted blood supply to and from the legs, causing heavy or painful sensations. If varicose veins are already present, they become worse in such situations, swelling and throbbing unpleasantly.

Gentle exercise, drinking plenty of plain water, avoiding coffee and salt, and spending 20 minutes sitting with the feet elevated can all help. There is also a gel made from Aesculus (Horse Chestnut), which is well known for its beneficial effects on the venous system.

Aesculus Gel tightens the membranes of the blood vessels, reducing complaints caused by a poor venous blood supply. The gel provides swift relief from these distressing symptoms, complementing the action of Aesculus tincture taken internally. It is also a viable alternative for those who dislike the taste of liquid herbal preparations!

Aesculus Gel should be rubbed gently over the affected area twice or several times a day. No undesirable side effects are known and the gel is pleasant to use.

The amount of blood found in an average healthy man is 5 to 6 litres. This is carried around the body by the arteries, which conduct blood away from the heart to supply organs and tissue and the veins, which return the blood to the heart from the various parts of the body.

Veins are different from the arteries in that their walls are thinner and looser, and the pressure in these blood vessels is lower than that in the arteries.

Factors such as a sedentary occupation, overweight, pregnancy, limited physical exercise can obstruct the flow of blood to the legs. Muscle pumps and the valves in the veins fail to operate adequately and fluid passes into surrounding tissue, causing oedema. Serious dilation of the surface veins may occur at the same time.

Often, the first signs of varicose veins are heavy and tired legs, especially when standing for some time. Twisted, dilated surface veins protruding beyond the level of the skin can form at later stages. Even worse, if varicose veins are very pronounced, inflammation (phlebitis) may result.

Symptoms of Varicose veins

Feeling of strain
Pulling pains

Varicose veins
Changes in the skin
Ulcers on the lower leg

Recently, many people have been experiencing relief from their symptoms by using the extract of Aesculus (Horse Chestnut). In Swiss trials, 84% of patients with varicose veins said they saw a marked improvement in their symptoms of heavy legs, cramp and swelling, within a 4 week period.

Cooling gels and ointments can be used to provide additional external treatment. They reduce pain in the legs when cramp and swelling develop. A gel made from Horse Chestnut seeds can be applied to the affected area to back up internal treatment with Aesculus tincture. It can also be used for leg tiredness, itchiness or painful legs.

Trials carried out in Switzerland show the effectiveness of Aesculus gel in tightening the membranes of the blood vessels, reducing complaints caused by a poor venous blood supply. Being a gel, it is absorbed very rapidly.

Aesculus gel should be rubbed gently over the affected area two to three times a day. It is a low-risk alternative to chemical synthetic vein therapy substances such as injections and is much more pleasant to use!
