THE rosehip is set to be the latest weapon in the fight against rheumatoid arthritis, experts say.

Research shows the plant extract has a ?remarkable? impact on people struck down by the condition, which affects 400,000 in the UK.

Medics are now set to recommend the natural remedy is used as a substitute for prohibitively expensive drugs.

Treating just one patient with the latest medicines costs up to ?10,000 a year, compared with ?240 for rosehip powders.
In a trial based in Copenhagen and Berlin, researchers discovered severely affected patients saw ?significant? improvements after taking the natural remedy.

The 74-strong, mostly female, group were all using conventional medicines and 33 were also given the rosehip supplement LitoZin, which is already widely used by osteo-arthritis patients.

After six months, people taking the supplement instead of a dummy pill saw activity levels improve by 20 to 25 per cent.

They also reported the number of joints causing them pain and discomfort fell by 40 per cent, tenderness overall was significantly reduced and their quality of life greatly improved.

All the testers, who had an average age of 57, were seriously affected by rheumatoid arthritis and had suffered for more than 18 years.

Professor Stefan Willich, from the Charite University Medical Centre in Berlin, who co-led the study, said: ?I think we were all surprised to see such meaningful results.

?Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most difficult medical conditions I?m aware of. It?s a tough disease, which makes it all the more remarkable to find such beneficial effects from this natural remedy.?

It is a painful and debilitating disease which occurs when the immune system attacks the joints, causing swelling and damage to cartilage and bone.

Around 4,000 people in the UK have the most serious form of the condition.

Newer, more effective medicines, including TNF Alpha inhibitors and the latest ?smart? drugs that target different parts of the immune system, are so costly that it is questionable how many patients will receive them.

Professor Kaj Winther, from the University of Copenhagen, who led the Danish arm of the study, said: ?One idea is that it might be possible to postpone the day that you need the expensive medicines. Then at least society would save some money.?

The way LitoZin works is un?clear, but it appears to have both anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects.
?It could be a plant version of fish-oil,? Prof Winther added.

Researchers now hope to take the remedies, which are widely available at high street chemists and over the internet, through to full clinical trials.
