Since the appearance of Viagra everybody understands that an insufficient blood flow to the penis is responsible for erection problems...

Indeed, all vascular risk factors hypertension, atherosclerosis, smoking, diabetes and high cholesterol affect blood vessels of the penis in the same manner as capillaries anywhere else in the body. This impairs the ability of arteries to expand and in the penis this directly translates to lowered erectile quality. Whereas we cannot judge the health of our blood vessels ourselves without medical instruments, penile erection was humorously suggested a man’s “barometer”, indicating his vascular health condition. What happens when erections begin to lose firmness?

During sexual arousal nerve signals to penis instruct local arteries to generate a molecule known as nitric oxide. There’s an enzyme present in cells of the arteries which generates nitric oxide from the amino acid L-Arginine. Muscle cells covering the arteries control the blood flow by contraction or relaxation.
