Diverticulitis

purpose: To provide a diet with 3 to 4 grams of appropriate fiber to promote regular elimination and increases fecal excretion.

Use: This diet can be used for the management of diverticulosis.

Dietary Guidelines

  • Omit nuts, fruits and vegetables with seeds because they may become lodged in pockets protruding from the intestinal wall
  • Coarse bran is the most effective fiber source in helping food move through the digestive system faster.
  • Increase consumption of whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables without seeds.
  • Drink at least 6 to 8 cups of fluid each day
  • Eat a balanced diet including foods from the basic four food groups

Whole grain breads, muffins, and bagels without seeds, nuts or coconut
pita bread, tortillas
Whole wheat crackers or crisp breads without seeds
Whole grain or bran cereals without nuts or coconut
Oatmeal, oat bran, or grits
Wheat germ
Whole wheat pasta
Brown rice

Any breads with seeds, nuts, or coconut.

FRUIT 2-4 servings each day

All fruits without seeds such as apples, apricots (fresh or dried), banana, avocado, dates, honeydew melon, kumquats, papaya, prunes, pumpkin, orange, peach, pear, grapefruit, nectarine

Fruits with seeds such as blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, whole cranberries, cranberry relish, figs, pomegranates, grapes, raisins with seeds
Jam and preserves with seeds

VEGETABLES 3-5 servings each day

Vegetables without seeds such as asparagus, artichokes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, green beans, green pepper, onions, peas, potatoes with skin, snow peas, spinach, mature squash( except zucchini), sweet potatoes, parsnips

VEGETABLES

Vegetable containing seeds such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and zucchini squash; corn, celery.

MILK & DAIRY 2-3 servings each day

All kinds of milk
Cheese, yogurt or ice cream that does not contain seeds or nuts

Cheese, yogurt or ice cream containing seeds or nuts

MEAT & MEAT SUBSTITUTES 2-3 servings or total of 6 oz daily

All meat, poultry, fish, and eggs
Beans and peas such as garbanzo beans, kidney beans, lentils, lima beans, great northern, pinto, white navy, split peas, and pinto beans
Soybeans
Smooth and creamy peanut butter

Chunky style peanut butter
Sausage with seeds
Nuts and seeds, whole or coarsely chopped, such as almonds, peanuts, Brazil nuts, cashews, peanut butter, walnuts, sesame and sunflower seeds

Whole-wheat pretzels
Cakes, breads, and cookies made with oatmeal, fruit without nuts, coconut or seeds
